Fiercely Awesome

TicTacToe Challenge TTTC007      This week I chose Acetate , Critters, and Die Cut

I decided for this week’s challenge to make my grandson Alton a Magic Color Slider card with the adorable tigers in the My Favorite Things Fierce Friends Stamp & Die set.  He is 2 years old, so I decided to make this extra “tough” so that  it would not be torn up in the first day.

20170723_111006  This photo shows the die and stamp sets I used for this project.  The Lawn Fawn Magic Color Slider set comes with all the pieces in the upper left corner –  Lots and lots of creative pieces.  The tiger stamps are the My Favorite Things Fierce Friends along with the die set.  The grass is from Sizzix grass die border.

20170723_111533   I used my big shot to cut out all these pieces.  My intention was to make 2 of them so I cut at least 2 of each piece.  The brown pieces are using GinaKDesigns Warm Cocoa cardstock.  I cut the white tab pieces and the colored tigers out of GinaKDesigns heavyweight white card stock, and the rectangle piece of the layering weight – this needed to be thinner.  The heavyweight cardstock should hold up to my grandson for a while.  I also cut 2 rectangles out of acetate for the front window.

20170723_111934   These are the other tools I used – along with my big shot.  I also added some duct tape not shown.  You will need 1/8 inch scor tape and I also used the 1/2 inch.  All this tape should hold up, somewhat, for my 2 year old.  The Misti is very important with this project as there is quite a bit of lining up, and probable re-stamping.

So, let’s get started.   The first step was stamping the tigers on the white rectangle.  The line up is about 1/2 of a grid away from the corner on both the side and the bottom.  I took the brown cut out and laid it on so I could be sure the tigers were going to be within the window.  Then removed the brown piece and stamped my tigers in Brutus Monroe Detail Raven Ink – you would just need a black ink that would stand up to your coloring medium of choice.
20170723_112152  20170723_112213  20170723_112306To stamp the window piece, you will need Staz-on black ink.  I lined up the acetate piece in the same position on my misti, but this time I taped it down with some post-it tape as it had a tendency to pull up.  I need to reink my Staz-on, so I had to stamp it twice in the same place.   20170723_112643

Then it is time to color the tigers (or your choice of stamps).  I colored the tigers in a light orange and their stripes in a darker orange, and just a bit of pink in their ears.  After cutting out some masks and putting down, I made the ground and sky using distress oxide inks in Cracked Pistachio and Broken China.  I stamped the little tree from the set and colored that in with brown and green.

And let’s put this magic slider together now.    Fold the long piece over, and slide the white tab piece into the slot in the fold.  Slide this in and out a few times to be sure the slot is allowing it to move freely.  Since this was for a little boy, I added some duct tape to the folded edges and also the stop tabs on the white piece.  (I flipped the white piece  over so the duct tape would not show)

Next step is to get out your scor tape and put it on both sides of the brown ‘u-shape’ tunnel piece. Then on the inside window piece (close to the cut out), and on the back of the colored piece.  I doubled up on the u-shape piece to make it easier to pull the tab in and out.  I took off the tape from one side of the u shape and placed it around the edge of the bottom folded piece.  Leave the other side tape covered, you will not need it for a few steps.  Remove the tape from the back of the white colored piece and place it firmly in the u-shape and press down.  I used my bone folder to press around the edges to get it to lay completely flat.

Now take the acetate piece and lay it right over the colored panel to match it up closely.  Make any adjustments necessary to make it fit (trimming).   Remove the tape covers from the front window piece, fold it over and press it down firmly on the acetate.  This will keep your line up in place.

Now take the white tab piece, slide it into the slot and lay it down in the u shape.    Fold it over and make sure it slides easily in and out.  Make any adjustments needed.  Then remove the tape covering from the u shape and fold and press to seal.

This completes the little magic slider and you can pick cardstock and background paper to match it up with.  I added the brown tab pull on both sides with scor tape.  I cut out the tab piece from the side of my card to make it easier for little fingers to grasp the tab.  The panel was taped to the card, again using scor tape in the hopes it would last longer.

I added some die cut grass at the bottom of the frame.  Taking another grass die cut, I stamped a sentiment from the set (You are Fiercely Awesome) and embossed it with white embossing powder.  I adhered the second grass and the extra die cut tiger with foam tape and the card is done.

I hope you enjoyed this instruction post – I know a little boy who is going to love this card.
Hugs and take care –
Mary Kay

  2. Wow Mary Kay this is such a fabulous interactive card!! Your instructions are so meticulous – I am amazed at how well the coloring of the tigers over the background worked without masking – that’s a technique I will have to try out now.
